Safety and Crime

A Safer Public Space For All

The most important role for any government is to keep its people safe. Citizens—including visitors and the un-housed—increasingly do not feel safe in our public spaces.

This is not because our police force is incompetent. It is largely because it has not been given the support it needs to enforce laws that are already on the books.

There is no community agreement on an effective approach that balances safety with resolving homelessness.

The city council lacks any real leadership and is as divided as our community on how to deal with the varieties of homelessness that we see in Boulder.

Without clear direction and support, both the police and citizens face conflict no matter what they do, which creates a lack of trust in every direction.

Our Council majority’s management of the Police Oversight Panel (POP) led to complete dysfunction.

We must demand more from our city council. In the upcoming election, we must elect city council members who want to resolve problems by including the entire community, not council members with their own agenda.

“Everyone should feel safe in Boulder”

“Just walking along our bike paths feels dangerous.”

“I want to help people who are homeless, but just allowing camping in the conditions I see isn’t safe for anyoneespecially the homeless people.”

“Is the ACLU helping or hurting us in our efforts to have a safe city?”
