CALL TO ACTION!
We no longer live in the old 'liberal/conservative' dichotomy.
Our political world has shifted under our feet.
Yes, right wing extremism is pervasive and noxious, like always. But now it has grown into a cult-like, anti-democratic monster that is threatening the very foundation of our country. And although liberals can generally agree we are clearly NOT what the political right stands for, we should not assume "our tribe" is all on the same page either.
Although no position within the current liberal world is even in the same universe as the extreme right, this should not deceive us into thinking that all is well in our camp.
Because it isn’t.
Liberal positions are not static - and unless you’re paying close attention you might be surprised at what is now attached to the word ‘liberal’.
Extremism has crept into our side too as tenets and principles that were once understood as part of our DNA are being trampled on - and in some cases completely lost. Much of it happening slowly but steadily - and often not with our full comprehension of what has actually become infused into Democratic policy.
Country-wide, the meaning of the word progressive, for example, has shifted greatly. In our local context, former environmental groups like the Sierra Club now encourage building and growth. These 'new progressives' have permeated most local organizations requiring us to be more vigilant.
Since ‘Progressive’ doesn't mean what it used to, it becomes particularly important to look in depth into candidates, positions, and proposed laws.
Let's think critically about who we are and what we stand for by taking action!
